What makes a great neighbourhood? Apart from good amenities and facilities, perhaps the next best thing would be to live among a warm and caring community.
In this month’s Quick Polls, let’s find out how people feel about the ties in their neighbourhoods!
It’s heartening to see that 8 out of 10 (83%) people we polled get along with their neighbours!
Getting along with our neighbours is the first step towards building friendships and strengthening bonds in the community. This can be valuable during times of need, when mutual aid and support can help the community tide through a difficult period.
In the olden days, Singapore used to have many Kampongs (Malay for villages), from which the term ‘Kampong spirit’ arose, referring to a sense of community and solidarity1. With villages being replaced by housing estates, is the Kampong spirit still alive?
Do you feel that Kampong Spirit still exists in your neighbourhood?
Based on 332 people polled as of 31 October 2021
Sadly, only 3 out of 10 (34%) we polled felt that the Kampong Spirit still exists in their neighbourhood. Perhaps many of us think of the Kampong spirit as an object of heritage relevant only in the past.
While we may not have villages today, we can easily find modern day examples of Kampong spirit! Record donations to charities amid the COVID-19 pandemic2 and successful crowdfunding efforts towards worthy causes are just some of the ways in which the Kampong spirit is manifest.
Let’s work to keep this spirit alive so everyone can enjoy the warmth and support of a caring community!😊
